What does PAS-24 security mean for new windows?
October is National Home Security Month, so doing what we can to keep our homes safe is often in people’s minds at this time of year. When it comes to new windows, you may have seen the term PAS-24 security used, but what does this mean for the products you buy?
Here’s everything you need to know about PAS-24 secure windows.
What is PAS-24 security?
PAS-24 certification is a security standard for products such as windows and doors. It can only be achieved if the whole product passes stringent security and quality checks to confirm it performs at the highest level. The aim is to enable homes and businesses to protect themselves against opportunistic criminals.
PAS (Product Assessment Specifications) is overseen by the BSI (British Standards Institution), so it’s a highly important certification for all new windows and doors.
What do PAS-24 checks involve?
PAS-24 assessments look at products as a whole unit rather than individual components. With checks carried out under strict laboratory conditions, the assessors look at the ways opportunistic intruders break into properties. The tests investigate aspects such as the locking cylinder and hardware via both manual and mechanical attacks.
During PAS-24 testing, the assessors mimic breaking into a property via the window or door, using hand tools, crowbars and force. The weakest areas of the windows, such as the corners, are also tested using pressure to determine the strength of the glazing bead and glass sheets.
Even if one test shows inadequate security, the whole product fails its PAS-24 assessment. If a product doesn’t pass the tests, any weaknesses and vulnerabilities must be strengthened before re-assessment.
What are the security standards for new windows and doors?
PAS-24 is a minimum standard for UK products, so always check this when considering new windows, doors and roof lights. The PAS-24 certification ensures windows meet Building Regulations Approved Document Q about the security of dwellings. Reputable manufacturers should meet this industry-set benchmark for quality, and all new build properties must comply with PAS-24 standards if they want Building Regulations approval.
Is Secured by Design the same as PAS-24?
No – Secured by Design (SBD) is a separate security initiative that accredits products on behalf of the UK Police. Manufacturers must obtain an SBD license if they want to make products with this accreditation. The aim of this initiative is to improve the security of both homes and the environment to reduce crime levels. Products will need PAS-24 certification to be considered for SBD classification.
