In 2022, Building Regulations Part L came into force, helping bring window energy ratings (WERs) even lower. This is great for property owners trying to improve the energy efficiency of their home or business, especially if you’re planning a window upgrade.
But how are WERs calculated and are your existing windows working for you? Here’s our guide to window energy ratings to get you started.
What are energy ratings for windows?
Window energy ratings allow you to compare the different energy efficiency performance of each product. You can usually find a WER by looking at the rainbow-coloured label (A to G) for ease. It’s important you find out the energy rating of any windows you’re considering, as this is one of the main areas of the home in which energy is lost. If you don’t choose an energy-efficient window, it could cost you when you see the price of your energy bills.
How are window energy ratings measured?
Window energy ratings are calculated using a multitude of factors. The formula used will consider aspects such as the window’s u-value, solar gain and air leakage to work out the overall thermal efficiency of the product. If the heat lost through the window is completely offset by the solar gain, windows are A-rated. The rating is tested and approved by independent organisations rather than the manufacturer, creating a reliable system to help buyers choose between window products.
What is a good performance rating for windows?
Windows rated as A++ are the most energy efficient, with G-rated windows performing the worst. However, to comply with Building Regulations, windows must have a rating of at least C. The introduction of Part L of the regulations means u-values for new and replacement windows must now be 1.6 W/m2k or lower.
How do you know if your windows are energy efficient?
If your windows are old or damaged, they may not have good energy efficiency. Signs of poor performance include visible wear and tear (such as cracks and holes), draughts, increased condensation and cold spots, all indicating insulation issues. You may also notice yourself turning on the heating earlier than usual if cold air is getting into particular rooms.
Should you replace your windows?
Signs you need new windows include high energy bills, worn and rotting frames, stiff opening and closing mechanisms, poor soundproofing, draughts and visible damage. You may also want to enhance the kerb appeal of your home with attractive designs from both inside and out. It’s best to get an expert on board to help you plan the right products for your property, including those with good energy ratings.
